Assignment #4: Is Beyonce' a Feminist?

BEYONCE: IS SHE A FEMINIST?

Feminist: the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

Feminist Movement
Social movement that seeks equal rights for women. Widespread concern for women's rights dates from the Enlightenment; one of the first important expressions of the movement was Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). The 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, convened by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and others, called for full legal equality with men, including full educational opportunity and equal compensation; thereafter the woman suffrage movement began to gather momentum. It faced particularly stiff resistance in the United Kingdom and the United States, where women gained the right to vote in 1918 and 1920, respectively. By mid-century a second wave of feminism emerged to address the limited nature of women's participation in the workplace and prevailing notions that tended to confine women to the home. A third wave of feminism arose in the late 20th century and was notable for challenging middle-class white feminists and for broadening feminism's goals to encompass equal rights for all people regardless of race, creed, economic or educational status, physical appearance or ability, or sexual preference.

  1. I think the message in Flawless by Beyonce is that no girl is perfect. She also, talks about what girls are expected to do and to be girly. The message the girl in back is trying to say that girls are supposed to act completely different from boys. Beyonce's message changed in the last few years because girls do not act the same way people expect them to act. I think Beyonce is femaine because she talks about stuff females would talk about. She also acts like a female.

  2. I believe the message Beyonce attempts to convey is about sexism and how females can be successful like men but to have respect for yourself while doing it. Why do females get penalized for things that men also do? We should have equal rights just as them. The message of Chimamanda is her describing feminism, which is the belief that both sexes should be equal. Her message has changed because now its more like women are on top. I simply can't tell if Beyonce is a feminist because I'm still not interpreting the word correct.

  4. I think the message of Beyonce's song "Flawless" is to show how women are not treated equal towards men. She is trying to get across that we live in a male-dominated society which is also known as a patriarchal society. The message of the speaker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in the background is her speaking on the fact that women are held back and are told not to reach their full potential and basically to not strive to do what men do which is to be successful. I am not sure of how Beyonce's message has changed during the last few years but I know that she is becoming more powerful and standing up for women as a whole. Yes, I believe Beyonce is a feminist because she is trying to get people aware that we live in a male dominated society and it should not be the way it is.

  6. i think that message of the song "Flawless" is that society looks at girls different than boys. They feel like boys can do plenty of things that girls can't. and Beyonce is showing how thats not true at all. That women as a whole should strive to be the best they can be and not to be limited to what society believes. in my opinion the speaker in the back round is telling the audience what society believes and how unfair and sexist their opinion really is.

  16. The song Flawless by Beyonce is inspirational. Women all over the world are given hope by knowing that they can do anything a man can do, maybe even better. Beyonce has always given women a voice when most women do not. As read in the article during dear a question was asked if she inspires young girls. I felt that she does so if she inspires them then the older women are being inspired just as well. Being the fact that women live in a male dominated society and that men tend to say that women cannot do anything a man can do. I believe that Beyonce is feminist because the songs she makes has a meanings to it. Beyonce doesn't purposely try to fight for women, but if you listen to the song and really think about the words depending on the song she is fighting for women all over the world.

  17. The message of Beyonce's song "Flawless" is that women can be just as successful as men and be able to support themselves. The message of the speaker is that women should have ambition but not too much ambition because it will threaten a man. This basically means that omen should be able to be just as successful as men but also know there place to not do too much and over power a man. In my opinion her message hasn't changed because she was promoting girl power in her old group Destiny's Child. Yes she is a feminist because she supports women independence.

  20. 1. the message of Beyonce's "flawless" is believe in your self that your perfect. when shes says "i woke up like this , we flawless" i feel like she is saying to young girls and women that when you wake up you got your beauty sleep and should think as your self as a perfect person rather than how others think about you.
2.the message the speaker is trying to get across in the middle of the video is to aim for success and to be better than you already are. go beyond limits you have not tried to pass.
3.i think the message hasnt changed. these young women and girls take pride in who they are.
4.i think Beyonce could be a feminist because of the messages she tries to put into her music

  21. Beyoncès song flawless is about her saying how girls are strong and powerful. She is also saying how us girls should be confident and no matter what flaws we have, we should not be scared to hide them. The speaker is talking about the expectations of girls and boys are damaging society for us. Beyonce's message has changed over the years because she has took "girl power" to another level. Of course beyoncè is feminist because she wants to change the fact that society is so male dominated and it's wrong

  23. In beyonces song flawless, I believe she's states that all women of all ages should take impowerment of their insecurities if they have any. Basically meaning to always be confident about theirselves and to stand up for themselves. The speaker in the back is telling how wrong sexism is. Beyonces message has changed through the years in a way that she's more feminist, she believes woman should be equal to or even more appreciated then the male species. Her messages in her songs and even ables get stronger year by year & the one she tends to send out now are more powerful.

  24. "***Flawless" brings the listeners attention to the inequality surrounding the two binary sexes. It calls out many double standards, such as the virginal image of women that has been put on a pedestal and the idea that women should not work their way up the job ladder for fear of belittling men. Beyoncé uses a sample of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED talk to enforce these feministic views and strengthen the power of her lyrics without actually preaching to the listener.

I don't listen to Beyoncé so I couldn't tell you exactly how she's changed, but I believe her spectrum of topics and material for her songs has shifted heavily towards feminism and empowerment of minorities. Beyoncé is a feminist whether she openly admits it or not because of what she sings and how often she can put out an album with an agenda of bashing sexism and misogyny. Though I do not personally agree with her views (I maintain that men and women should work to be complimentary rather than equal), I can definitely detect the conviction in her words and choreography.

  25. I think the message of Beyoncé's song "flawless" is that she became successful with her own efforts and not because she is the wife of jay z. The message of the speaker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in the background is that society is teaching girls that they must think of marriage as their top priority. Society is also teaching girls that they cannot sexual beings in the way that boys are and cannot share their virtues. Beyoncé's message has changed during the last few years from talking about needing a man and money to being a strong independent woman who can achieve a lot. I think Beyoncé is a feminist because she wants women to be treated the same way as men.

  26. "Flawless" is a trap-influenced song, with a dirty groove and a clattering beat. The message by the speaker is telling the women of our future to think for them self's. Yes Beyonces message has changed over the past couple of years cause now in her songs there more with rage except for happiness like if she is mad at someone. No. I think she is just telling young girls and women that they don't need man to think for them they have there own brains and mouth.

  27. I think the song flawless is suppose to be a message that whatever a woman does, its flawless. As untrue as this may be it is her message. She wants to empower females through her vocal message. Beyonce's message has changed because she went from just doing music or making a song for money, to really trying to speak for young females. She wants to spread the idea that women have power too. For this really Beyonce is a feminist in my eyes.

  28. The song happiness is about to believe in yourself, and that you're equal to everybody else in the world. I don't listen to Beyoncé so I don't really know how she changed within the years of her being in the music industry but from the few songs I heard a few years ago it seems like she shifted to feminism because she feels like our society today is to male dominated.

  30. The song flawless exposes that not all women are perfect . Every woman will have her flaws . But she is saying that we have to learn how to imbrace it . The public says that she is a feminist & i do agree . She does it for the best because she is trying to show that this is a patriarchal society. Beyonce has gone far in her career & still is & i see her as a great influence .

  37. I believe that beyonce ins not feminist. Her message is to show that men and women are equal. We live in a male-dominant society and its been like that forever. Men were always given more rights than woman. Now times have changed and beyonce is just putting it out there to show us that having a male dominant society is not right.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think the message of Beyoncé song "flawless" was girls can be independent and flashy without a man to support them because in today's society everyone thinks men are supposed to support women and be the head of everything. The message of the speaker in the background was women and men cannot be equal, the men are supposed to have better jobs than women and support the family. Im not really sure how Beyoncé message has changed over the years but i do know that her focus is mainly on young women and helping them to feel beautiful and telling them they can be independent without a man in their life. I think Beyoncé is feminist because she influences women to be independent and not depend on guys for everything showing them that they can do the same as men.

  39. I think the message of the song flawless is that women can be just as successful as males. Society was male dominated many years ago and women broke out of that and started making a difference. I dont think beyonce is sexest. She has made it very far as a female in society.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think what Beyoncé means in the song Flawless is that females can be just as successful as men. They teach us to be classy and not sexual like men and to that marriage is important but not as important to men. That they teach us to not over shine the men because they are always supposed to be above us.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Also, I do think Beyoncé is a feminist because she shows us everyday that men and women can both be successful in life

    ReplyDelete
  42. I Think what Beyonce is trying to say in this song is that not every girl not perfect, and the voice in the background is trying to send a message that women can be succesful as men and Beyonce shows that shes a feminist and during the last past years Beyonce has shown that women can succeed and she has other songs like for example "all the single ladies"

    ReplyDelete
  43. The song"flawless" by beyonce speaks of woman everywhere. Woman are not perfect half of the time but beyonce is trying to say that we still got it. In todays society it shows a little male domination. the voice in the background says that you can have ambition but not too much, be successful but not too much. the voice in the background stereotyped woman saying focusing on marriage thinking thats what all woman want most of the time. sometimes its about independence in this case beyonce is being a feminist. she supports all woman and through out the years are songs are becoming more and more feminist. most of her songs such as: single ladies, irreplaceable and etc.
